Simple ways to a successful career

Vince Lombardi said that the difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will. To excel and grow in your career you need to make sure that you are ready to work on it and you do it right. It is not always easy to be perfect, but in order to succeed and grow in your career you need to work on yourself. Yes, the way you view things and the way you discipline yourself is the key. Improvement and growth should not be your final destination but rather the way you go all the way to the top. The way we think and feel defines the outcome and materializes into success or failure.

It’s easier said than done, but Confucius was right, choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. We may not have a hobby that we can easily turn into business, or may not have hobby at all, but it doesn’t mean you should perceive your employment as paid slavery. If you are not excited about your job, your or your team’s achievements, closed deadline, new business win or even positive feedback from your boss, you won’t ever be successful. Any dissatisfaction lays within ourselves, if you really detest the work you’re doing, just leave!

No matter what, stay optimistic. Nobody wants to promote Mr. NO… Well, maybe “Yes Man” with Jim Carrey is an exaggeration, but in order to succeed you should be “go getter”. If your management suggests that the new approach will give you better outcome, don’t say no unless you tried it out and it really didn’t work. Most of the times we are pessimistic about new or unknown things just because we don’t really want to do it or lazy to try. Start saying yes and experiment.

Experiment, learn, change and grow. If you don’t want to get stuck in the same position forever, you should stop doing the same thing all over again. In order to excel you need to learn something new. No need to be a constant student of course and enroll in a 3rd BS or MBA that you don’t really need, but sometimes training or a short course will serve the purpose. If you find that it is financially impossible, read a new book or discover something new about your client, any newly acquired knowledge is an asset. Learn how to use your assets and benefit from them.

Don’t just hear but listen carefully. Those who learn how to listen and pay attention to details are more likely to be successful than those who like to speak all the time. Speak when it is necessary, but listen non- stop. There is no such thing as useless information. Even the fact that your colleague is spreading a piece of useless rumor, is already a good piece of information. At least you know now who’s talk is cheap, and believe me, at times it is very good knowledge.

Last but not the least, work on your work-life balance. Working over the weekend and staying in the office until midnight may have some benefits, but on the long run it will make you burn out. When we burn out, we tend to become indifferent and there is nothing worse than triviality towards your work. If you care for the success of your company, you will certainly grow within. Relax, switch off your laptop, iPad, iPhone and switch on your iRest to come back to work on Sunday refreshed and ready for success!
